Malingnant glioma Gene therapy has been used as supporting treatment along surgical- chemo- and radiation therapies. | In these cases, the cavity of former tumor has been injected with suicide gene containing vector. The vector's treatment gene will produce thymidine kinase which will convert a non-toxic Gansiclovir prodrug to toxic form.
The cell cannot divide when a nucleotide analog is being formed from Gansiclovir. In addition, the effect is being spread further when analog is being taken up by neighboring cells (by-stander effect). |
At the moment, a product intended for treatment of malignant glioma is in Phase III trials (Sitimagene ceradenovec). More information: Ark Therapeutics.
