Head- and neck cancer

The cancers in head- and neck region have been promising targets for gene therapy. At the moment the most common method for clinical gene therapy in head- and neck cancers has been the use of conditionally replicating adenoviruses for the cancer treatment.

The viruses penetrate to the cancer cells, which contain a mutation in their p53 tumor suppressor gene.

The conditionally replicating adenovirus contains a mutation in the viral genome, allowing the replication only in those cells which contain the non-functional form of the p53.

While copying itself, the virus destroys the host cells and new viruses can spread the infection to other cancer cells.
